The Problem With Atlanta Falcon Fans

September 11, 2008

I’m not a huge fan of the NFL…can’t really tell you much about it.  I grew up in Alabama, a state that has no pro football, only complete adoration for the college scene.  Having lived in the state of GA now for almost 4 years, I’ve been slightly warmed up to the pro stuff…only slightly though.  And, of course, have heard plenty of coverage about the Atlanta Falcons.

While I was running some errands yesterday, I decided to listen to some sports talk radio.  Two different callers exemplified the problem with some (perhaps most) Falcon’s Fans.  Here was what one guy said:  “Yeah, I’ll be honest, I was hoping Matt Ryan would perform poorly so that Michael Vick wouldn’t be so quickly forgotten.”  Now I don’t have the time or patience to fully explain the background of this comment…or the ignorance of it.  Mind you, this comment is coming off a weekend in which the Falcons did the unthinkable in their season opener – beating a decent Lion’s team as an underdog…and beating them convincingly.  Ryan was 9 of 13 for 161 yards and 1 TD.  Michael Turner, the running back, shocked the NFL nation with 220 yards and 2 TDs.

So seriously…no, seriously…you wanted your new QB to perform badly so people would still sympathize for a guy serving prison time?!  I thought perhaps this was just an isolated thing until the next caller echoed something similar.  Wow…can you say MOVE ON?
